Botox is the treatment of choice for non-surgical correction of upper facial wrinkles.  The forehead, glabella (space between the eyebrows) and the crow’s feet areas all develop wrinkles from the underlying muscles contracting as we animate.  As these muscles contract they cause the overlying skin to wrinkle.  Over time these wrinkles can become permanently established in the skin.  By softening the muscle activity in the areas with unsightly wrinkles the skin is sujected to weaker contractions and therefore the wrinkles become less pronounced.  They usually don’t completely go away but they are certainly improved.

Results, What to Expect

Botox doesn’t last forever and its effects are usually only seen for three months.  After this time the muscle activity starts to recover and the skin begins to wrinkle again.  When used consistently every 3-4 months the effects may be longer lasting and the skin will look better than if its used sporadically.  Think of this like going to the gym, results are only seen if a consistent regiment is applied.

Procedure & Cost

The injections are given in the office and are essentially painless.  Sometimes there can be a little bruising but this is not too common.  At the Cleveland Plastic Surgery Institute, Dr. Leedy uses the recommended reconstitution guidelines for Botox so you can be assured that you will receive the proper concentration.  Costs are in line for the community and run $15/unit.  Typical initial treatment doses are 20 units for the glabella, 12 units each crows feet area, and 12 units for the forehead.  Dr. Leedy will use his clinical experience to adjust these initial doses to achieve the results you are looking for.  Botox starts to work in 2-3 days and the improvement in the skin continues for 2 or more weeks and then plateaus.  Again if continued regularly the effects will be longer lasting and nicer.
