What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a non-surgical approach to fat loss. It works to target, freeze, and reduce fat cells in your body by using innovative fat-freezing technology, leaving you with a slimmer, more contoured shape.

- Love handles
- Back (including along the bra line)
- Upper arms
The most frequently asked questions about CoolSculpting
After checking in for your appointment at Cleveland Plastic Surgery Institute, you will be shown to a private room when the Coolsculpting machine is ready. Before beginning the procedure, a Coolsculpting applicator will be placed over your treatment area.
The Coolsculpting device suctions to your skin and drops the temperature around it, freezing fat cells without harming the surrounding tissue. The freezing damages the integrity of your fat cells and will lead to their eventual death.
During your treatment, which takes about 35-60 minutes, you can relax, read a book, play on your phone, or nap. Once the treatment is over, you’re free to go without any downtime or restrictions.
Much like having a dental procedure or getting your blood drawn during a routine physical exam, your CoolSculpting treatment experience will depend largely on your unique pain tolerance. Generally, CoolSculpting is described as mildly to moderately uncomfortable. Painful? Not so much. The sensations that you may experience during your procedure may include tugging, aching, cramping, and tingling around the treatment areas. Eventually, the treatment area will go numb. This all tends to occur in about 10 minutes.
You can also expect to encounter some aching, cramping, and/or tingling after your CoolSculpting treatment. These side effects are manageable with rest and, if needed, over-the-counter medication.
One of the benefits of CoolSculpting treatment is that you don’t need to take time off work or your normal routine to recover. That said, it’s also important to really tune into your body. You can work out the day after getting CoolSculpting, but if you notice that your soreness, aching, tenderness, or other after-effects worsen, the wise thing to do is stop. Exercise can help your body process and flush excess fat. However, the timing of your exercise isn’t imperative. Your healthy habits, even if started a few days to a week after your CoolSculpting sessions, can be effective at helping you achieve your optimal body contours.
It can take up to three weeks after Coolsculpting before you notice the contouring results. Two months after your treatment you reach the most impressive results, and your body may continue to eliminate fat cells for another four to six months.
It is possible to get results after just one CoolSculpting treatment, but we may suggest multiple fat freezing treatments to deliver the optimal results. This all depends on your personal goals and preferences.
The results of your Coolsculpting treatments are permanent – this treatment eliminates fat cells for good. These cells do not return, nor will fat cells migrate from one area of your body to another. The treated area will always have fewer fat cells than it did before Coolsculpting.
However, in order to preserve these results, it is necessary to maintain your ideal weight. If you eat well for your body type and ideal weight, and you engage in some form of physical activity that is good for your body, you can expect your CoolSculpting results to last for many years. Keep in mind that you can schedule touch-up treatments once or twice a year as needed to maintain your ideal body shape.
It is perfectly understandable that you want to maximize your CoolSculpting results or accelerate the speed of fat elimination as much as possible. Better body contours are your reward and you want to achieve them quickly! Suggestions for helping the process along include:
- Massage the treatment area. Studies have not proven that post-treatment massage can achieve significantly better results. However, it doesn’t seem to hurt. How to assist your body’s natural dissolution and elimination of destroyed fat cells will be discussed during your appointment.
- Drink plenty of water. Your body is mostly water content. Staying very well hydrated allows functions like detoxification and fat elimination to occur efficiently.
- Do some strength training. While walking and cardio exercise are great for fat-burning, studies suggest that the body remains in fat-burning mode for longer after strength training. It doesn’t even have to be rigorous, just consistent. Even body-weight exercises three to four times a week can be helpful for moving your CoolSculpting results along.
